DESCRIPTION

In commercial flocks, a literal black or pigmented sheep is rare (typically less than 1% of a standard white-wool flock) because farmers historically bred out the recessive black gene because they would contaminate the white wool fibers creating inconsistent colouring.

HOWEVER...on Coonong Station in the Australian Riverina a flock of 700 black Merino ewes are run and shorn separately from the station’s 32,000 white Merinos to avoid fibre contamination in the lines. Ultiomately creating a natural coloured wool from black and brown Merinos which is a VERY rare fibre among the wool market.
